Prayagraj: Unprecedented Traffic Congestion at Maha Kumbh Mela
As devotees flock to the Maha Kumbh Mela, severe traffic congestion has brought movement to a standstill. Despite police efforts to block multiple roads, traffic has not eased, with reports indicating jams stretching up to 300 kilometers.Numerous online users are referring to it as the "largest traffic gridlock in the world."
The Maha Kumbh Mela, a sacred Hindu gathering held every 12 years, is taking place from January 13 to February 26 this year. Every weekend, the number of devotees surges, but Sunday saw an unprecedented influx, leading to historical levels of gridlock not only in Prayagraj but even extending to the Uttar Pradesh border. In some areas, vehicles have been stuck for up to 12 hours, making travel extremely difficult.
Police Advisory & Public Struggles
Police have advised travelers to avoid road travel to the Kumbh Mela site, especially from Madhya Pradesh, where heavy traffic congestion has been reported. Major roads in districts like Katni, Jabalpur, Maihar, and Rewa are jam-packed with thousands of cars and trucks. Viral videos show long vehicle queues, with residents reporting that traffic extends over 250 kilometers in some areas.
Officials state that the primary cause of this extreme congestion was the sudden arrival of millions of devotees on Sunday. Authorities estimate that it may take a few days for the situation to normalize. Despite efforts to control the crowd, the influx of pilgrims continues, making it nearly impossible to manage the traffic.
With cars stranded for hours and long queues of vehicles stretching across districts, Prayagraj’s Maha Kumbh Mela has resulted in what many are calling one of the worst traffic jams in history.
