UN Secretary-General António Guterres calls for the urgent evacuation of 2,500 critically ill children from Gaza amid ongoing conflict. Learn about the humanitarian crisis and efforts for medical assistance.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres has urged the immediate evacuation of 2,500 critically ill children from the Gaza region, warning that they are on the brink of death.
Urgent Medical Assistance Needed
Four American doctors have been working in Gaza for the past 15 months amid intense conflict. Following a meeting with these medical professionals, the UN chief made an urgent appeal for assistance for the affected children.
He emphasized that 2,500 children in dire condition must be evacuated immediately. On January 19, just days before the planned ceasefire, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported that over 12,000 patients were awaiting medical evacuation.
Of these, 2,500 children urgently require life-saving medical treatment. A doctor warned that anything could happen to these children in the coming weeks, stating that they are all at the edge of survival.
No Guarantees
Another doctor explained the severity of the situation, saying that some children might die tomorrow, while others could succumb the next day. So far, Israel has not responded to the matter concerning these 2,500 children.
While the ceasefire could facilitate medical evacuations, no concrete efforts have been made yet, according to a medical professional.
Meanwhile, negotiations are underway for evacuations through the Rafah border crossing. However, leaked reports indicate that those leaving for treatment have no guarantee of being allowed to return through Rafah.
