India Introduces 9,000 HP Electric Locomotive: Revolutionizing Freight Train Speed & Efficiency
Indian Railways is set to launch a powerful 9000 HP electric locomotive capable of pulling freight trains at a maximum speed of 100 km/h. Manufactured in Gujarat, this advanced train engine aims to enhance cargo transport efficiency. Learn more about India's latest railway technology and modernization efforts.

A state-of-the-art and powerful locomotive engine with a capacity of 9,000 horsepower (HP), capable of pulling freight trains at a maximum speed of 100 km/h, is set to be introduced soon.
Introduction of the Modern Engine
India is set to launch a cutting-edge electric locomotive within the next month, designed to haul freight trains weighing between 4,500 and 5,000 tonnes at speeds of up to 100 km/h.
This 9,000 HP modern electric locomotive is being manufactured at the railway engine factory in Dahod, Gujarat. It has been specifically engineered to efficiently pull heavy freight trains. Indian Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw recently inspected the project.
During a press conference, he stated, "The first 9,000 HP modern electric locomotive is expected to be launched within the next 30 to 40 days. Increasing the speed of freight trains remains a key priority for Indian Railways. In 2020, twin 12,000 HP electric locomotives were manufactured at the Electric Locomotive Factory in Madhepura, Bihar.
However, unlike those twin-engine models, the upcoming locomotive will be a single-engine unit. This new engine will be the most powerful locomotive in the history of Indian Railways."
