AIIMS Madurai Set to Relocate to Permanent Campus by 2026: Latest Construction Updates & Future Plans.
AIIMS Madurai is set to shift its operations to its permanent campus at Thoppur by early 2026, with Phase I construction 28% complete, including academic blocks, outpatient services, and hostels. Phase II, covering remaining infrastructure, is expected by February 2027. The campus aims for IGBC Gold certification, featuring a 900-bed hospital, a 150-bed infectious disease block, residential areas, sports facilities, and a 750-seater auditorium. Currently, AIIMS operates from its temporary campus at Government Medical College, Ramanathapuram.

Madurai: AIIMS Madurai is projected to relocate its operations to its permanent campus at Thoppur, Madurai, by early 2026, according to M.Hanumantha Rao, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the institution. In a statement on Thursday, he mentioned that 28% of Phase I construction is complete. "We are striving to transition to the permanent campus by the end of this year or early next year," Rao stated.
Phase I, which encompasses the academic block, outpatient hospital services, hostels, and essential service structures, is anticipated to finish within 18 months of its start. Phase II, covering the remaining infrastructure, is scheduled for completion within 33 months, by February 2027. Rao emphasized that the construction adheres to international standards with a focus on sustainability, aiming for an IGBC Gold Rating to promote environmental responsibility and energy efficiency across the campus.
The 900-bed hospital, featuring a specialized 150-bed infectious disease block, is designed to be all-encompassing and patient-focused, including an academic zone, hospital facilities, hostel and residential areas, sports amenities, and a 750-seat auditorium. Faculty recruitment is underway in stages. Currently, AIIMS Madurai operates from its temporary campus at Government Medical College, Ramanathapuram.
