Canada to Hold Economic Summit in Response to Trump’s Tariff Threat

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced that he will hold a one-day economic summit in Toronto on Friday (9th) with business and labor leaders to address U.S. tariffs and their economic impact.

On Monday, U.S. President Donald Trump stated that he would delay imposing tariffs on Canadian exports for 30 days in exchange for concessions on border and crime enforcement.

Since 75% of Canada’s exports rely on the U.S., Trudeau emphasized the need to find ways to strengthen the economy.

Key Objectives of the Summit:
Reducing domestic trade barriers.
Expanding export markets.
Attracting new investments in industries.
Streamlining lengthy permit approval processes (such as oil pipeline and mining projects, which often face years of delays in Canada).
The summit is expected to include business leaders, industry representatives, government officials, and labor leaders. However, the Canadian Prime Minister’s Office has not released a list of eligible participants.

This summit is seen as an effort to reduce Canada’s deep economic dependence on the U.S. and establish an independent growth strategy.
