Trump Confirms Tariffs on Canada: Trade Disputes and Canada's Retaliation Plans.
U.S. President Trump confirms the imposition of tariffs on Canada, citing unfair trade practices. Canada prepares retaliation measures, including energy export bans and tariffs on select goods, as tensions rise between the two nations.

Trump Confirms Imposition of Tariffs on Canada
U.S. President Donald Trump has reiterated that he will follow through with the tariffs on Canada that he had previously mentioned, confirming his decision on Saturday.
Unfair Practices Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office on Thursday, Trump stated that Mexico and Canada have never done anything beneficial for the U.S. in trade matters, adding that they have treated the U.S. in an extremely unfair manner. As a result, Trump emphasized the necessity of swift action and mentioned that the goods they have will no longer be needed by the U.S.
Trump pointed out that the U.S. has enough oil and timber to meet its needs, and that tariff rates could increase or decrease depending on the situation. While he could not confirm if oil would be exempt from the tariffs, he mentioned that a final decision would be made soon.
Meanwhile, the Canadian administration, responding to Trump's tariff threats, has stated that it is prepared to face any challenges. They also indicated the possibility of canceling energy exports and imposing export taxes on certain goods and resources.
Discussions on Threat However, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith opposed any retaliatory measures from the U.S., urging Canada to act decisively to address Trump's border security concerns. This issue has caused tensions between Smith, the federal government, and other premiers in recent weeks.
In this context, Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly and Public Safety Minister David McKinty are currently in Washington, D.C., meeting with U.S. officials to discuss the impending tariff threats. If no smooth resolution is reached during these meetings, reports suggest that Canada is preparing for a three-round tariff strategy.
