Guatemala: Tragic Bus Accident Claims 51 Lives After Plunging Off a Bridge

A devastating bus accident in Guatemala has left 51 people dead after the vehicle crashed through a roadside barrier and plunged off a bridge. The tragic incident has caused widespread shock and sorrow.

The accident occurred on Monday when a bus traveling from San Agustín Acasaguastlán to Guatemala City lost control in the El Progreso region. The bus fell approximately 65 feet, rolling and crumbling upon impact. Reports indicate that the driver lost control, hitting other vehicles before crashing through the bridge barrier and plunging below.

Out of the 70 passengers on board, 51 lost their lives. Victor Gomez, a spokesperson for the volunteer fire brigade involved in rescue efforts, confirmed the number of bodies recovered in a temporary morgue. Officials fear that the death toll may rise further.

Guatemala's leader, Bernardo Arévalo, conveyed his sympathies, describing it as a "challenging day for the nation."

Minister Miguel Ángel Díaz stated in an initial investigation that the bus, despite being 30 years old, still had a valid operational license. Authorities are investigating whether overloading was a contributing factor to the crash.

This tragedy follows a series of deadly bus accidents in Latin America. In January 2018, a bus crash near Lima, Peru, claimed 52 lives, and in March 2015, a tour bus accident in Santa Catarina, Brazil, killed 54 people. The Guatemala accident is one of the most severe in recent years.
