Chennai: India has abstained from voting in the United Nations (UN) on a resolution supporting Ukraine, a move that has surprised many nations, especially Russia and the United States.
The resolution, introduced by Ukraine and its European allies, aimed to promote "comprehensive, just, and lasting peace" in Ukraine. It emphasized protecting Ukraine’s borders, safeguarding its sovereignty, and ensuring Ukraine's involvement in peace negotiations to end the ongoing conflict.
Recently, US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin held a phone conversation, agreeing to initiate talks to end the Ukraine war. Notably, these discussions occurred without involving Ukraine. Trump even conducted separate negotiations directly with Russia, sidelining Ukraine and European nations. This approach caused shockwaves across Europe.
In response, Ukraine and its European allies presented the resolution at the UN. The draft received 93 votes in favor, 18 against, and 65 abstentions—including India’s.
India’s Stand: A Strategic Move
India’s decision to abstain has raised eyebrows globally, especially in Russia and the US. Several factors influenced India's stance:
Neutral Ground: Russia and the US, usually on opposing sides, found common ground regarding Ukraine. Despite this, India maintained its independent position.
Balancing Relations: Historically, India has tread carefully between supporting Russia or the US, fearing backlash from either. However, with both nations aligning on this issue, India had more flexibility.
Selective Opposition: While India may oppose Ukraine directly, it cannot afford to alienate European nations who co-sponsored the resolution.
Non-Aligned Tradition: India has consistently maintained a non-aligned foreign policy. Regardless of whether Russia and the US align or oppose each other, India prioritizes its independent stance.
India’s abstention underscores its commitment to strategic autonomy, even amid shifting global alliances.
