U.S. Pushes for Elections in Ukraine Amidst Ongoing Russia Conflict: Trump’s Special Envoy Weighs In
U.S. President Trump's special envoy Keith Kellogg urges Ukraine to hold elections amid the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war. As the U.S. pressures Ukraine for a ceasefire agreement, political experts raise concerns over potential Russian interference and the impact on Ukraine's democracy.

It has been reported that U.S. President Donald Trump's special envoy has stated that America wants presidential and parliamentary elections to be held in Ukraine.
Good for Democracy
Trump's special envoy for Ukraine and Russia, Keith Kellogg, indicated that elections could take place by the end of this year. He also mentioned that elections should be held if a ceasefire agreement is reached with Russia.
Most democratic countries have held elections during wartime, and I believe it is important for Ukraine to do so as well, Kellogg said in a media interview. Furthermore, he added that such a move would be good for democracy, calling it the beauty of a strong democracy, as it would allow multiple people to compete in presidential elections.
Despite President Zelensky's comments that excluding Ukraine from U.S.-Russia negotiations is a very dangerous act, America has now voiced its opinion on the elections.
Before being elected as President of the United States, Trump often claimed that the Ukraine-Russia war could be resolved in a single day. He and Kellogg also stated that they were working on a plan to create an agreement to end the Ukraine war.
However, they have released very little information about the details of such a plan or the timeline for its implementation.
Elections Could Be Held
In this context, reports have emerged suggesting that Kellogg and White House officials have decided to pressure Ukraine to accept elections as part of any ceasefire agreement with Russia.
Political experts have raised concerns about the U.S. pressuring Ukraine to hold elections, particularly with accusations of Russian interference in elections in other Eastern European countries in recent months and years.
Meanwhile, President Zelensky had previously stated that elections could be held in Ukraine if the war ended this year. However, he had also called for strong security guarantees to prevent Russia from resuming hostile actions.
Zelensky's five-year term was set to end in 2024, but holding presidential and parliamentary elections under martial law was not possible. Ukraine implemented martial law in February 2022 following Russia's invasion.
