Chinese AI Lab DeepSeek’s Android App Dominates Google Play Store, Surpassing Apple’s Chart-Topping Success

DeepSeek, a Chinese artificial intelligence research hub, has swiftly climbed to the top position on the Google Play Store, mere days after its chatbot application secured the number one spot on the Apple App Store.

As per insights from app analytics provider AppFigures, since its mid-January debut, the DeepSeek app has garnered over 1.2 million downloads on the Play Store and more than 1.9 million installs on the App Store globally. Significantly, the real number of installations might be even higher, as DeepSeek's listing on the Play Store indicates over 5 million downloads.

DeepSeek’s meteoric rise in the rankings coincides with a surge in demand for its suite of open-source AI models, which are positioned as strong competitors to prominent offerings from Western AI giants like Anthropic, OpenAI, Meta, and Google.

However, the Chinese organization asserts that its AI frameworks were developed at merely a fraction of the cost compared to those of OpenAI and Meta, despite utilizing less powerful AI processors.

DeepSeek’s mobile app serves as an alternative to ChatGPT, operating on its in-house V3 model. Users can leverage the chatbot to analyze documents, retrieve answers, and browse online information. The application is available free of charge, enabling users to upload files and synchronize conversations across multiple devices.

Despite DeepSeek's current dominance, it would need to achieve 300 million weekly users to surpass OpenAI’s ChatGPT and secure a long-term lead in the chatbot market.

Both DeepSeek and its AI-powered models have attracted significant industry attention in recent days. Emerging tech firms such as Perplexity and Gloo—the latest venture by former Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger—are already incorporating DeepSeek’s AI capabilities into their platforms.
