Trump Temporarily Suspends 25% Tariff on Mexico After Talks with President Sheinbaum

Washington: U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a temporary suspension of the 25% tariff on Mexico for one month. Trump made this decision following a phone conversation with the President of Mexico.

Last month, after assuming office as the U.S. President, Donald Trump suddenly announced tariffs on imports from China, Canada, and Mexico. He declared a 10% tariff on Chinese imports and a 25% tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico. Trump justified this move as a measure to protect the U.S. economy.

The White House stated that this decision was made to curb illegal immigration from Mexico, prevent drug trafficking, and tackle gang-related issues. The U.S. has accused Mexico of failing to control illegal immigration, drug smuggling, and gang-related crimes. Additionally, the White House claimed that Mexican drug cartels have ties with the Mexican government, which further justifies the tariffs imposed by the U.S.

Trump had earlier stated that these measures would continue until Mexico and Canada take strict actions against illegal migration and fentanyl trafficking. In this context, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum held a phone conversation with Trump regarding the 25% import tariff. Following this discussion, Trump posted an update on his social media platform, X.

According to Trump, during the conversation, the Mexican President assured him that strong measures would be taken to prevent illegal immigrants from entering the U.S. from Mexico and to curb drug trafficking from Mexico to the U.S. Furthermore, Mexico has committed to deploying 10,000 National Guard troops along its northern border, adjacent to the U.S., to enhance security.

Trump stated that President Claudia Sheinbaum has given guarantees regarding the prevention of illegal immigration and drug trafficking. Consequently, Trump announced a temporary suspension of the 25% import tariff on Mexico. This suspension will be in effect for one month, and further negotiations will continue until an agreement is reached with the Mexican government.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum also addressed the issue on her social media platform, X, stating, "Our teams will begin working on security and trade matters."
