How much gold is actually stored there? Fort Knox holds approximately 147.3 million ounces of gold—half of America's total gold reserves. This gold has never been removed, except for small quantities taken out during standard audit processes to test its purity.

Fort Knox is fortified with top-tier security measures, and only a few know its exact structural details. Even the method of opening its vault remains a secret to most. Built in 1936 using 16,000 cubic feet of granite and 4,200 cubic yards of concrete, it’s one of the most secure facilities in the world. The last public inspection was in 1974, when a group of journalists and congressional representatives was allowed inside following rumors that the gold had been removed. Since then, only authorized officials have been granted access, with President Franklin D. Roosevelt being the only U.S. president to have personally inspected the vault.
